GREENWICH TIME, MAY 28, 1945

John I. Weiby Dies In Naval Hospital
Seaman 1c John Irving Weiby, U. S. Coast Guard, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Weiby, of 40 View St. East Port Chester, died Friday at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., from complications following an operation six weeks ago. He was 20 years old.

His parents were at his bedside when he died. His body was expected today, accompanied by a Naval guard, at the Russell J. Shaw Funeral Home in Port Chester. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Born in East Port Chester, Seaman Weiby was a senior at Greenwich High School when he enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1943. He was awarded a diploma by the high school because of his scholastic standing at the time of enlistment.

He received boat and quartermaster training at Manhattan Beach, N. Y., and was transferred to the Berkley Naval Training Station at Norfolk, Va., where he was taking special courses when he was stricken.

Seaman Weiby was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and was for several years an active member of the East Port Chester Sea Scouts.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, is one sister, Borghild Weiby, a cadet nurse at Grasslands Hospital.
